IVAN THE GREAT - broke briefly shortly after the start hampering a trailing runner. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding. Hampered by a slight easing of the pace and over-raced for a distance passing the 1500m causing driver A Edge difficulty and shifted outwards near the 1350m forcing SWEET SPIRIT to race wider on the track. Lay inwards for a distance and paced roughly when being shifted wider on the track near the 950m. Again lay inwards rounding the final bend causing driver A Edge difficulty and struck the sulky wheel of ARCHIE and broke and shifted inwards checking EVIDENTLY which fell dislodging driver K McClintock. Stood down to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards on one occasion prior to resuming.

Authorisation of 1st placing was withheld until Stewards were satisfied the gelding had not gained any advantage when racing inside a track marker near the 100m. In reaching this decision Stewards were satisfied there had always been a clear run for ARCHIE in the passing lane. Notwithstanding this driver A Cameron was shown a replay and warned to ensure she does not allow her runner to race inside track markers.

Driver J Morrison admitted a breach of Rule 869(3)(b) in that he drove carelessly when shifting ground. After viewing the replays and hearing submissions on penalty, the Adjudicative Committee suspended Mr Morrison's driver's licence from the conclusion of racing on 17 May up to and including 23 May 2024 (2 days).

When questioned regarding the performance driver J Dunn advised he attempted to improve wide through the middle stages however the speed of the race had increased markedly so he elected to restrain his runner and attempt to obtain cover which did not eventuate. Mr Dunn added that the mare was racing up in grade and considering this he was not disappointed with the effort.

Driver S Thornley advised he would be recommending gear changes.
